  4. Where does the product live after the sale? Can you register it, find the manual, and reorder parts without creating another account or calling a service line? That is part of the total cost, even if it never shows up on an invoice.

Look, I am not saying every cheap appliance is a trap. I am saying the price tag is not the price. The vendor who lists fees upfront—even when the total looks higher—costs less in the end. That is what I want: a price I can see and a total cost I can trust.

Here is how it ended for us. The dishwasher worked, but it cost more to install than it should have because I did not ask the setup questions early. The freezer we ordered was the one with the better energy label; the math says it pays for itself.
