Scenario 3: How Hot Does a Hair Dryer Get? The Answer Is Usually Normal Heat

The National Electrical Code, specifically NEC 314.27(C), requires boxes at ceiling fan outlets to be listed for fan support. Practical rule: if the box is not marked for ceiling fan support, do not hang a fan from it. A fan-rated box will usually say something like 'For ceiling fan support' or list a maximum weight.
If you have not installed the fan yet, this can wait until you hire an electrician. If the fan is already installed and the box is not fan-rated, that is a different situation. The downside is not just a wobbly fan. A fan can crack the box and pull live wires down with it.
We once paid a $180 after-hours electrician fee to reinstall a lobby fan on a fan-rated ceiling fan outlet box. The fee felt unnecessary until the electrician showed us the old box cracking around one screw. The fan had not fallen yet, but it could have.

- Is the appliance still functioning but just not cleaning or heating as well as before? That is probably a normal maintenance issue, not an after-hours emergency.
There is no magic answer that fits every brand, model, or building. But an informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I would rather spend ten minutes explaining the options now than schedule an unnecessary rush visit—or wait on a repair that should have been handled today.
